Birkhill Castle
in northeast Fife, Scotland
on the Firth of Tay
Join Drunken Fiddles for an experience of a lifetime!
Grab your passport and your fiddle, viola or cello—Scotland awaits! But this isn’t just any trip… we’re staying in a luxurious castle. What we have in store is unlike anything we’ve ever done before: you’ll get the chance to play music inside the stunning Birkhill Castle, learn from local musicians who are masters of Scottish music, and collaborate with our expert Drunken Fiddles clinicians. Music will be woven into every aspect of our journey—whether we're out exploring or at "home" in our palace. And of course, we’ll be playing together every day, whether it’s in the castle library or on the private beach by the River Tay.
Â
Birkhill Castle in the Kingdom of Fife is everything you imagine a Scottish castle to be--and more. It’s a magnificent, Scottish Baronial chateau, where full-length family portraits, crystal chandeliers and four-poster beds set the scene for a memorable country escape.
An ancestral home, Birkhill Castle is first and foremost a grand but comfortable family home. With an elegant drawing room, historic library and welcoming sitting room, there’s space to socialize, with quiet corners too.
Head outside for a game of tennis or croquet, a hike, or a wander in the walled garden. The 1,500-acre estate meets the Tay estuary, where there’s a fire pit for private beach music jams. Another day you can explore the estate, where red squirrels scamper through ancient woodlands and otters, seals and even the occasional sea eagle can be spotted down at the estuary.
Later, a castle-worthy bed awaits. Egyptian cotton bed linen, luxury newly-renovated bathrooms with bathrobes, and views across the estate all add up to restful nights.
Stirling Castle & The Kelpies
We will travel to Stirling Castle to tour one of Scotland’s greatest stone castles--in use for over 500 years!
We will also get to visit a modern marvel: 100-foot equine sculptures that reflect on the workaday and mythological roles of horses in Scottish culture.
Edinburgh Tour
This expedition will allow for your own mix of sightseeing, shopping, music and food as you explore the historic capital city of Scotland. You'll have the opportunity to consult a local expert for suggestions. What will you discover?
We'll close out the day by meeting for a glorious traditional pub dinner at The Sheep Heid Inn, and then head out for music and dancing at a cèilidh!
Crossover violinist Laurel Morgan Parks has been following her musical path since the young age of 4 when her dad brought home a banged up fiddle with a bow that lacked most of its hairs – it was love at first listen!
Laurel is the violinist for the Wires String Duo, Of Tree, and In the Pines. After studying classical music at the Conservatory of Music at University of Missouri- Kansas City she found her true passion in improvising and composing music on her violin. Her inspiration comes from exploring fiddle traditions and styles from around the world as well as writing music for indie, pop and folk bands.
As a professional musician Laurel has performed with acts such as the Trans Siberian Orchestra, the Eagles, Sarah McLachlan, Amy Grant, Evanescence, Josh Groban and Disturbed.  She's played with the Lincoln Symphony Orchestra, the Des Moines Symphony Orchestra and the international Mantovani Pops Orchestra.
Parks is currently the founder/instructor of Drunken Fiddles – a fiddle workshop for adults who want to learn to play a stringed instrument from the absolute beginning while incorporating fiddle styles and non-classical techniques along the way.
Sascha Groschang, cellist, has performed extensively across the United States, Europe and Asia. She has appeared at Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall numerous times, and gave her solo debut recital at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall in 2009. She has been a soloist and lecturer at the Thailand International Composition Festival, performed for the King of Malaysia with the Kuala Lumpur International Festival Orchestra, and traveled all across China on two tours with the Mantovani Pops Orchestra. She has shared the stage with artists such as Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman, The Eagles, Vince Gill, the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Michael Bublé, Peter Gabriel, Josh Groban, Sarah McLachlan, Idina Menzel, Amy Grant, Sarah Brightman and her recording credits include NBC, Atlantic, and Rhino Records.
Sascha is the cellist and co-composer of the alternative string duo, "The Wires", which explores a variety of non-traditional string techniques and styles through original compositions. The Wires have released three full length albums and their arrangements and original compositions are published with Mel Bay Publishing Co. They were also co-hosts/curators of "Sound Currents" on 91.9 ClassicalKC for 2 years - a weekly radio program that explored a broad range of new music.
In addition, Sascha is principal cellist of NewEar Contemporary Chamber Ensemble, dedicated to playing the works of living composers. In 2022, she joined the St. Petersburg String Quartet. Their accolades include a Grammy nomination, "Best Record" honors in both Stereo Review and Gramophone, a five-year residency at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, and hundreds of concerts on many of North America, Europe and Asia's most prestigious series and festivals. Since joining, the group has performed in Estonia, Kazakhstan, France, Germany, Israel and across the United States. Sascha is also a member of the Fountain City String Quartet and the 417 String Quartet, in which she performs the popular classical and pop Candlelight Concerts in 10 different cities across the midwest. “Jeff Buckley meets Nina Simone with this soul of Sam Cooke, and the sparkle of Bjork.” - Peregrine Honig, Artist
Singer, harpist, and author Calvin Arsenia has built a reputation for turning the arts world on its head. Voted Kansas City's Best Musician 2018 - 2023 (The Pitch), and featured on Billboard.com, NPR.org, NEWNOWNEXT, Pride.com, and GRAMMY.com, Arsenia’s angelic stylings on voice and harp create rare harmonies and arrangements that look past the boundaries of his traditional gospel and classical upbringing. Known for his elaborate and ceremonious sensory concert experiences that merge jazz and electronic influences, “Calvin has consistently deliver(s) genre-bending (and gender-bending) shows that tackle sexuality, religion, and race in a stunningly unorthodox manner - somewhere between sacred and sacrilege." - Fally Afani.
The music is just one part of his prodigious performances, for Calvin believes the art is in crafting the perfect moment. His music is best served live, with sensational performances and high fashion from the visually striking performer who stands at 6’6”.
Alongside his best friend and co-host New York based comedian Justin Randall, Arsenia explores the ups and downs of being a queer person raised in the Evangelical Church in the 2020-2021 podcast We Were Christian Kids.
In 2021, Arsenia released a book of poems and stories called Every Good Boy Does Fine; Both a journey of individual healing and a call for action, these poems show that, with a little love and acceptance, anyone can flourish.
